My Top 5 Eggs Benedict in KL & PJ

I can honestly say that I've had a fair share of Eggs Benedict/Eggs Atlantic in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, as I would always choose Eggs Ben over Big Breakfast or Pastas. A crusty bread, perfectly poached eggs with runny yolk (shape doesn't really matter to me) and just enough hollandaise (not too thick, but not too runny either) to cover the eggs because if too much sauce it will be quite 'jelak', and the sauce should have the tangy flavor there to make the dish more pleasant tasting. Here is to share what I would categorize as my top five favorite Eggs Benedict/Eggs Atlantic in KL/PJ area. (Disclaimer: it's personal preference) and sharing with you as well the dishes that I've had in other cafes.

Rank No. 1: Tedboy Bakery, Jalan Telawi 4, Bangsar Baru
I actually found this unexpectedly through googling 'eggs ben in kl' and there was this comment and rating on tripadvisor for tedboy to have the nicest eggs ben and truly it is! Well, for me the hollandaise could be a little more tangier but I rank it number one is because of it being very standardized. For both the times I had it, both tasted as good.

Rank No. 2: Yeast Bistronomy, Bangsar
I prefer their oeufs mollet florentine but their eggs ben is also of high standards and quite delicious. Of course, I've seen that they have French chefs in the kitchen and their menu is quite premium.

Rank No. 3: That Latte Place, Ikon Connaught & Map's Sunway
I would have ranked them the first if I didn't go for the second time. (Maintaining standard is verrrrrry important) I still remember the first time I had it, I told myself this was the best, best, best eggs ben I've ever had in kl. The perfect poached eggs, crispy cold salad, and crunchy crispy hot cubed deep fried potatoes that were so, so good. But, it was the opposite the second time I went. The potatoes were cold, not even warm, it was cold, and the taste was kinda not as nice as I remembered it to be. So my expectation declined immediately. I'm not sure if the owner owns TLP and Map's together but their eggs ben were quite similar.

Rank No.4: Twenty One Grams Cafe, PJ Newtown
Presentation of the dish was verrrrry simple but the taste was good. I liked it actually.

Rank No. 5: J&D Espresso, Lebuh Bandar Utama
Quite a posh looking cafe, and have lots of variety of food and drinks. I saw someone having some orange cake or something that was flaming. Their eggs ben is huge, very filling for me, I couldn't finish the bread, just that I'm not sure was it truffle oil they use, or maybe too much they put in, it was somewhat a bit too overpowering and made me feel 'jelak' halfway. But overall, taste was alright.

And below are pics of the eggs ben of other cafes...

The famous Antipodean, ever so crowded when it opened. I still remember their big breakfast was SO huge, and had to be shared. But now, portion shrank, and I feel their standard dropped. This was served to me the last time I went. Midvalley.

TBF (The Beer Factory), now become a casual dining place, Sunway Giza.

 AMPM cafe, USJ

The Atlantic, The Good Batch, Damansara Uptown

 Yellow Brick Road, Jalan Batai

Nutmeg, BV2. Some people like their gravlax but I don't really. It tasted fishy. And the hollandaise was so eggy and I can taste the 'blowtorch' fire taste.

Eggs Atlantic, Garage 51 Sunway. Kinda pricey for the portion size. Eat not full for me.

Also another eat not full and pricey. Jibby & Co, Empire Shopping Gallery.

Quartet TTDI. Well this was long long time ago, the hollandaise was too sour. Hope it has improved now.

Wood and Steel, Kota Damansara. Average.

The famed Kampachi buffet is back at Kampachi Plaza@Jaya 33

Ahh, my ever fave Japanese buffet to go for. It was sad for me when Equatorial Hotel closed for renovation thus I can't go for my favorite Japanese buffet in KL. Although there are many other buffets in KL but our all time favorite is still Kampachi nevertheless.

Do note that you might need to make one month advance booking to dine for the Sunday lunch buffet. I made my reservation beginning of July only to be told that the next available date is in August. Upon my arrival, the hostess had trouble searching for my name as, I supposed someone used my name and sat at my table because my name was already highlighted.

Walking in to the premise, I find that it is very spacious, the tables are mostly taken but unlike previously in Equatorial, it is not packed nor hard to walk. Spaces among the tables are wide and each section is easily accessed every corner. But do mind the steps and gaps on the floor. The restaurant is nicely designed and you can locate the beautiful bar, teppan counter, sushi counter easily. My dad says they can top up 20-30 more people easily.

Service was excellent. The hostess first put us at this rotating seating pod but due to my grandma's walking condition he alerted the manager and thus switched us to the main dining hall for a more comfortable seat. We were then asked for drinks and as we opted for green tea, they gave us 2 different pots of different green teas to try. I did not ask what, but my guess is normal green tea and the one with roasted rice or something like that. There were mocktails promotion which was very tempting actually, priced at RM15 per glass. And at the end of our meal, we were given comment card to be filled. Last order is at 2.30pm and they will go to each table to inform.

They have very sufficient manning whereby each and every used plate of ours were cleared almost immediately after we finished, which for me, I could have recycled the same plate again, but well, I guess not every customer think as I am. Teas and ice were refilled all the time for us. And very well, all smiles from them. Very good. Because service can definitely affect your return to the establishment.

The seating pods that can be rotated for privacy. (But what privacy can you get inside actually hermmm?)

I didn't notice actually until I saw their fb page, the sugidama (Sake-ball) right next to the kan-ba logo. As you walk in the entrance you will see their beautiful bar counter. Very nice.

 Fresh as always

 The sushi counter

Teppan counter (beef, salmon, prawns) and sukiyaki counter at the corner.

The japanese pancake counter. Hmm, no more Kampachi logo on the pancake though.

Matcha ice cream with red bean is a must, must, must!

I have yet to try Iketeru, so as for now, Kampachi is still at our top list.

Kampachi Plaza@Jaya33's Sunday Buffet Lunch is priced at RM118++ for adults and RM68++ for kids.

A Wet Thai Food @ Kampung Kayu Ara

I was attracted to this restaurant when I saw it being featured in one of those phood programmes on Jiayu tv. I saw that it was a floating restaurant surrounded by water but missed out the address. And one day I passed by when I was going to Pantai Seafood so I told my friends I wanna eat here! When I reach there, where's the floating restaurant? Then only I knew that there are a few branches and the floating branch is in Kajang if I'm not mistaken. Wasted. But nevermind.

5 of us, 5 dishes.

Kerabu Chicken Feet (RM11) - Lack of something, maybe the sourness. Average.

Stir fried Kangkung (RM12)

Tom yam seafood soup (RM20) The soup is nice but not much seafood inside. Be careful there's another one tom yam with prawn, that one is more expensive because they give the fresh water prawn I think.

Siakap, in lemon style (RM45). I forgot the full name but the 'lemon' or 'lime' word is there. Nice. Sour, super spicy (request for less spicy, we already request less spicy but it's still super spicy!). Love the 'soup' that comes with it.

There's various fishes with a list of various cooking methods which you can choose from. And there's a barbeque section at the outer part of the restaurant for all the grill n barbeque items. Will definitely go there again but am still searching for the best Thai food around here. And I found an easy way to make your own tom yam soup which I think is quite nice :p

Charcoal burner

We also ordered their deep fried calamari (RM18) but you can skip that. It looks like those frozen crumbed calamari rings, and it's chewy, hard to bite.

Total bill was RM127 for 5 of us. The food is nice, but can still be better. Maybe different branch different. Hmm...

Chinese New Year dinner @ Pantai Seafood Restaurant

Every year the few of us college mates will try to fit in time to meet during chinese new year. Well, not just cny but as many times as we can during the year before everyone is just too busy with their own life. Though just the four of us but it was a nice get-together.

Ed's treasure. Awesome.

I forgot to snap the salted egg crab! Swt. The bill came up to around RM200 for 5 dishes including the yee sang. Well, it was cny, definitely price will hike up. And through this dinner I vow not to eat shark fin anymore!

Although Pantai's price is not to say cheap, but for the few times that I dine there, service was good. The captain was honest to tell that the crab is very small in size. And she offered to help remove the cork which fell inside the XO. And came to the table a couple of times to check if everything is ok. Ed tried to give her RM10 as personal tips but she declined it. Tapi angpow boleh. XD

Kedai Makanan Ang Kee, Cheow Yang SS2

I've always been wanting to update this phood blog but somewhat laziness and time doesn't allow me to. No, it's just i chose to do other things rather than updating :p

I've passed by this restaurant many many times in Cheow Yang and saw that it was usually crowded so I vowed to try it someday and I did. This visit was like half a year ago I think :p

It's not a big restaurant, just a one shop lot, with I guess around ten tables only. Nice place for family dinner, chinese style or what we call 'dai chao', dishes served with white rice. Yum! There were 6 of us, so we ordered as below:

Foo Yong Egg Omelette (RM10)

Seems like they're quite famous for their fish dishes as we see most tables ordered fish so we ordered the 'dry assam fish'. I think we ordered tilapia. Forgot. (RM28)

The Four Kings :p "sei dai tin wong" (brinjal, long bean, lady finger, four angled bean) stir fried in belacan (RM10)

House Specialty tofu (silky tofu with mushrooms) (RM12)

Buttermilk mantis prawn (this was recommended in blogs) nice! (RM16)

Long pork ribs (RM16)

Rice was RM1.30 per bowl, we ordered chinese tea (RM5.50). Price is average. I like most of the dishes, but just the assam fish tak cukup oomph, the tofu nothing really special. But in sum all are very yummy with rice indeed.

There are other dishes recommended but yet to try: Lala noodle, steam tofu with egg etc, all sounds yum.

(opens for dinner only i think, except for Thursday 11.30am-2.30pm for noodles dishes)

Indoor 'Alfresco' Dining @ Garden Cafe, One Utama

One look at the cafe, I was in love with it. Fully white furnished, with garden arches with artificial florets and leaves coiling around it.

A grand white piano stood beautifully at the entrance of the cafe, welcoming the guests elegantly to be seated, making people wanting to touch the keys on the piano so much.

It's not just a cafe, but rather a lifestyle store and a cafe. There are garden related things sold inside as well, such as pots, standees, artificial plants, garden decorations and accessories etc. At one glance, people will see similarities of Garden Cafe with Fullhouse in NZX. Yes, it's managed by the same people of both restaurants. Garden Cafe is also linked with Voir gallery, a neighbour boutique store.

They serve set lunches in the afternoon. Price were quite reasonable, which was one of the factors attracting me to dine in. One look around, it seems like a nice place to have a big gathering too.

Three of us, we ordered two set lunches and a set of a la carte items. The set lunch comes with a soup of the day and a drink where you can choose between ice lemon tea, coffee or tea. I ordered the carbonara set (about RM15.90), whereas my friend ordered the nasi lemak set (about RM9). Another friend of mine ordered the clam pesto pasta (a la carte) (about RM16).

Iced Coffee (too milky, my friend said)

Rose soda (a la carte) - This is freaking expensive deyh! RM12 if i'm not mistaken. Almost the same price as my friend's pasta already!

Ice lemon tea which comes with the set.

Soup of the day - Mushroom soup. Yippee! (Taste is there, but I feel it's too pureed. Prefer some course bites inside)

A no no for the day. The pasta were clumped up together. I guess they just saute it without blanching the noodles again. Portion was small too.

Looks very small portion right? Yes it is. But it's adequate due to the creaminess. Slightly lack of seasoning though.

I categorize their service as.. hmm.. good and bad. Why so? My carbonara was delayed for about half an hour at least. Seems that the order did not turn up at the kitchen side. As for the good side, I didn't finish my carbonara, the server came and ask if anything is wrong. Oklar, at least they're caring enough to ask so. Overall, it's ok. Nice place to hang out. But I hope the food will be improvised.
